Key Trends in Climate Innovation

Climate innovation is divided into two areas: addressing the causes of climate change and coping with its consequences.

Decarbonization

Decarbonization can be viewed from two perspectives: reducing the greenhouse gas emissions and absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

Reduce energy use

Reducing energy consumption is a cornerstone of climate innovation, alongside renewable energy and carbon removal.

Geothermical energy

Enables low-carbon heating and cooling systems (e.g. geothermal heat pumps).

Energy storage

Because energy generated by wind turbines and solar panels cannot yet be stored—especially when there is no wind or the sun isn’t shining during the day (and, of course, not at all at night)—research is being conducted on how to store energy. With the help of such energy storage systems, periods when no energy can be generated can be offset.

Climate resilience

Climate resilience involves questions such as: How can cities in affected regions adapt to increasingly harmful heat waves so that life remains bearable, especially for vulnerable groups?
